LCC Reads

What is LCC Reads?
Each year, the LCC Reads Committee__a group of students and LCC faculty, including our Head Librarian and Head of the English Department__select one book for the school community to read over the summer. Students from Middle School through Pre-U and all school staff read the same selection which is discussed when classes resume in the fall.  The author is also invited to visit the school and discuss the book with students.

What will we read in 2010?
The search for the 2010 book title has begun.  From 49 nominations, the list has been narrowed down to 3. The thirty students on the LCC Reads Committee had a lively and stimulating meeting on January 20th and the chosen books are:

Monster
by Walter Dean Myers

The Last Mission
by Harry Mazer

A Hope in the Unseen
by Ron Suskind

All three titles will be read by the members of the Committee during the spring break and the winning book will be announced in April.  Be sure to check back for the results!

Stuart McLean Visits LCC
On October 2nd, the LCC community had the great pleasure of welcoming Stuart McLean to the school to discuss his writing and his career as an entertainer.

Mr. McLean was interviewed by The Wire newspaper, he was the guest speaker at a special assembly for grades 7 through to Pre-U, he attended a reception in the Junior Library hosted by the LCC Reads Committee and he addressed the Grade 11 students in the Chamandy Auditorium.

The students thorougly enjoyed Mr. McLean's visit and his humourous presentation as well as his sage advice.  This event was a spectacular culmination to LCC Reads 2009.  Mr. McLean's visit was filled with laughter and fun as well as very touching and emotional moments.  It will be remembered by all students and staff for a long time and we thank Mr. McLean very much for taking the time out of his hectic schedule to come to LCC.

The 2009 Winner is Announced!
The LCC Reads Committee is pleased to announce that the winner for 2009 is:

  • Home From the Vinyl Café by Stuart McLean

"Stuart McLean is a best-selling author, award-winning journalist and humorist, and host of CBC Radio program The Vinyl Cafe." ...

"Stuart’s books Stories from the Vinyl Café, Home from the Vinyl Café, Vinyl Café Unplugged, Vinyl Café Diaries, Dave Cooks the Turkey and Secrets from the Vinyl Cafe have all been Canadian bestsellers. ... Stuart is also a three-time winner of the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour for Home from the Vinyl Café, Vinyl Cafe Unplugged and, most recently, Secrets from the Vinyl Café."

(From the Vinyl Café website)

This book will be distributed to all grade 8, 9, and 10 students at the end of May through the LCC Store.

The students on the committee felt that this was a very appropriate choice, since LCC is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and Stuart McLean is one of its most famous graduates.
