iPad Program (iPride)

About

An iPad Program for Grades 7, 8 and 9 Students

As a school committed to preparing students for success and leadership in a sustainable global society, we are continuously enhancing our practices and evaluating the devices that we use to support the learning process.

For nearly 10 years, LCC offered a 1:1 laptop program at the Middle and Senior School levels.

There has been a significant evolution in technology in recent years. Tablets have become increasingly robust devices and the quality of the apps available to support these machines has improved exponentially.

With this in mind, and after considerable analysis and discussion with our faculty about the tools and applications required to support the delivery of our curricula, in September 2014, we introduced a 1:1 iPad Air program (with an accompanying keyboard as an accessory) for Middle School students. In September 2017 the iPad program was extended to grade 9 students.

Our teachers continue to pursue their training on the effective pedagogical use of the iPad and the applications used to support our students’ learning.

There are currently four Apple certified teachers at LCC.

Q&A

Why was the iPad introduced in grade 7 in 2014-2015 instead of a laptop?

We have conducted our own research within the school and have determined that there are several advantages for student learning with the iPad device. They are much lighter for children to carry and there are many existing apps that are relevant to our academic program.

Furthermore, they are portable, can be used by students to create content on interactive white boards and encourage inquiry- and problem-based learning as well as cross-discipline curricula. Also, they are a source for immediate feedback and all-class participation, peer-to-peer and teacher-student collaboration, and the teacher is no longer confined to the front of the class when teaching.

How come all LCC students aren’t using iPads?

Our Junior School students have been using iPads in the classroom for the past four years. Grade 9 students have the option of using an iPad or Macbook. Grade 10 and 11 students are all using their own Macbooks. Pre-U students are encouraged to use a MacBook Pro, but can bring any type of laptop. As we prepare students for their post-secondary education, the development of computer literacy is essential. In addition, a computer is necessary for advanced coding.

What am I obligated to purchase for grade 7?

All incoming grade 7 students require an iPad, earbuds, keyboard, an Apple Care Package and protective case. The device needs to be the current generation iPad 128 GB or newer device. Note that although the iPad Air 128 GB has been discontinued, we will support use of this model. Families who wish to use a currently owned iPad should note the following specifications:

  • Must be 128 GB
  • Must be reset to factory setting

Do I need to purchase a wireless keyboard for the iPad?

It is required for grade 7 and highly recommended for grades 8 and 9.

How much will the iPad 128 GB cost?

The iPad 128 GB with AppleCare+, purchased through Apple.com, is $519 + $99. There is an additional $20 rebate if you purchase this bundle through the LCC Apple campus online Store ($519 + $79).

I currently own an iPad; is it possible for my child to use this device instead of having to purchase one from the LCC Apple Store?

If you already own an iPad Air 2 or iPad Pro, your child will be able to use it. However, storage needs to be at least 128 GB and must be set as a new iPad before starting school.

What is the difference between the iPad I own (if applicable), and the device available through the LCC Apple Store?

The pencil ready iPad 128 GB was released in March 2018. It includes the A9 chip, which enables apps to run quickly.

What does the iPad Bundle include?

The iPad bundle includes the iPad 128 GB, lighting to USB cable, USB power adapter and Apple Care+.

Can I purchase the iPad from any Apple store?

You can purchase the iPad 128 GB through any authorized vendor, but we strongly recommend that you purchase it from LCC Apple store in order to save $20.

Are there any additional accessories to be purchased?

It is required that you purchase an iPad case to prevent the device from being damaged. Grade 7 students are required to buy earbuds and keyboards. Grades 8 & 9 students are required to buy earbuds and it is highly recommended to purchase keyboards.

Will my child use the iPad throughout high school?

At the moment, students will use the iPad from grade 7 through grade 9. Grade 10 and 11 will continue to require a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, as it is best suited for the needs and demands of the curriculum.

Is it possible to upload the required apps needed for the grade 7 program on an iPad that I currently own?

It is possible so long as the device respects the minimum requirements for the Grade 7 iPad 128 GB program and it is clean and factory reset.

In July 2018 Apple Education will require schools to add all iPads into their mobile device management system (Molsyle). This system will allow us to send apps directly to the students, monitor application use during school hours and provide teachers and parents with options to support students' learning.

Grade 7 students will have the apps pushed to them through the mobile management system during the first week of September. Grade 8 and 9 students will update the required apps during the first week of school.

Are there any additional warranty options available for the iPad 128 GB?

Every iPad comes with one year of hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary support. AppleCare+ for iPad extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPad and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a $49 service fee plus applicable tax. In addition, you’ll get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts via chat or phone.

Every MacBook Pro comes with a one-year limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary telephone technical support. Extend your coverage to three years from the original purchase date of your Mac with the AppleCare Protection Plan. You’ll get direct, one-stop access to Apple’s award-winning telephone technical support for questions about your Mac, MacOS and Apple-branded applications such as Photos, iMovie, GarageBand and more. In addition, you’ll get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts via chat or phone. You can even get local repair service when you visit other countries around the world.

Does LCC offer support for software/hardware related issues or do I need to go through Apple Support?

LCC Helpdesk supports network issues and basic troubleshooting for software issues. Any hardware issues must be resolved through Apple Support Centres.

What are the application options for word processing?

The applications we suggest for word processing are: Apple Pages and Google Docs.

Which applications will my child be using?

Your child’s device will include all the necessary apps relevant for the program and will be installed during the fist week of school for grades 7, 8 and 9. See list of applications on the "iPad Applications" tab of page.

How will my child store his/her files?

Files will be stored on iCloud as well as Google Drive. This will be handled during the first week of school.

How can we protect the device from being damaged?

A sturdy case for your child's device is required and is the best way to protect the device.

What happens if the device is damaged during the school year?

By purchasing AppleCare+ for the iPad, the device is covered for two years and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a $49 service fee plus taxes.

By purchasing AppleCare for the MacBook Pro the device is covered for three years which provides global repair coverage for both parts and labour at Apple authorized repair centres.
