Junior School
Academic Program
The Junior School music program provides each child with a variety of musical experiences and aims to foster a love of music. Students are given opportunities to display individuality of expression and interpretation of music.
Grade 1
Students are introduced to music with a multi-sensory approach. They explore echo singing, creative movement, develop a sense of beat and learn basic music concepts such as fast/slow, loud/soft and high/low. Music is taught primarily through the Kodaly and Orff methods, focusing on singing, rhythm recognition and developing aural skills. Improvisation and creativity are encouraged, with the help of basic guidelines. Whether it is singing, cooperative learning for rhythmic compositions, music listening or exploring xylophones and metallophones, students have many opportunities to develop their musical experience. The grade 1 students perform in assemblies, in the holiday concert in December and the Grandparents' Day concert in May.
Grade 2
Students experience music through a multi-sensory approach. They continue to explore echo singing, develop their singing voice, creative movement, reinforce keeping a steady beat and further their knowledge of basic music concepts such as fast/slow, loud/soft and high/middle/low sounds, as well as learn the musical terms. Music is taught through the Kodaly and Orff methods, encouraging improvisation and nurturing creativity with the help of basic guidelines. Whether it is singing, cooperative learning for rhythmic compositions, music listening or exploring xylophones and metallophones, students have many opportunities to develop their musical experience. The grade 2 students perform in assemblies, in the holiday concert in December and the Grandparents' Day concert in May.
Grade 3
Students continue to build on their musical background. The recorder is introduced and used to teach how to read musical notation, as well as apply and expand upon their rhythmic skills. Singing, vocal technique, and the use of Kodaly hand signs are used at this level. Encouraging improvisation, the Orff method is used to nurture creativity. Whether it is singing, cooperative learning for rhythmic compositions, music listening or exploring xylophones and metallophones, students have many opportunities to develop their musical experiences. The grade 3 students perform in assemblies, in the holiday concert in December and the Grandparents' Day concert in May. They may also participate in the Junior Chorale.
Grade 4
Students continue to build upon their musical background. Developing their recorder skills, including expanding their knowledge of notes and rhythmic patterns, is a goal for the year. Basic music theory is explored, singing, vocal technique, and a deeper use of Kodaly hand signs continue at this level. Encouraging improvisation, the Orff method is used to nurture creativity. Whether it is singing, cooperative learning for rhythmic compositions, music listening, exploring xylophones, metallophones, or classroom drums, students have many opportunities to develop their musical experiences. The grade 4 students perform in assemblies, in the holiday concert in December and the Grandparents' Day concert in May. They may also participate in Junior Chorale and the Junior School Musical.
Grade 5
Students continue to hone their performing skills and further their knowledge of the basic elements and structure of music. In particular, they become familiar with the orchestra and its instruments, learn the meaning of a variety of musical terms and to play melodies and basic chords on the ukulele. Music history is introduced and students learn basic conducting skills. The Orff method continues to be an integral component of the program, encouraging creativity and improvisation. The music curriculum also helps students develop listening skills, develop their voices to the best of their ability, and create music using appropriate applications such as Garage Band.
Grade 6
Students continue to hone their performing skills and advance their knowledge of the basic elements and structure of music. In particular, they become familiar with the orchestra and its instruments, learn the meaning of a variety of musical terms and further their abilities to play the ukulele, including pentatonic and diatonic scales, as well as more advanced chords. Music history and basic conducting skills are continued. The music curriculum also helps students develop listening skills and their voices to the best of their ability. Music projects, comprising composition and appreciation, using appropriate applications such as Garage Band, are also explored.

Academic Program
Grade 7 Music
All grade 7 students have music class twice a week. No previous experience is necessary as students are introduced to performing music in a concert band setting. At the beginning of the year students have the chance to try out wind ensemble instruments under the supervision of professional musicians. Music class is IB/MYP focused and students learn how to play their instrument, read and create music and reflect upon their performance experience.
Grade 8 Music
In grade 8 students must choose between music and an art/drama split. Music class is a continuation of what was learned in grade seven using a IB MYP focus that centres around a concert band model. Students learn more complex rhythms, musical notation and become technically proficient on their instruments. Students also attend a band camp where they spend three days in rehearsals, clinics with professional musicians and enjoying themselves in the Laurentians.
Co-curricular Program
Glee Club
A group for Middle School students who enjoy performing and singing. The Glee Club performs at a variety of school events including the Middle School Play, grade 8 graduation and Café Cabaret.
Grade 8 Junior Jazz Band
This goal of this ensemble is to introduce students to the concept of jazz music. Students are exposed to a variety of styles and learn several pieces of music which are performed at school concerts.

Grade 9 Music
Students learn advanced concert band repertoire, the basics of improvisation and attend professional concerts. All grade 9 students automatically become members of the Senior Concert Band and participate in band camp, trips and concerts.
Grade 10 Music
Advanced instrumental techniques and musical concepts are explored and the grade 10 program is IB/MYP Music Focused. More advanced improvisational skills are developed in addition to higher standards regarding musicianship and musical appreciation. All grade 10 students are automatically members of the Senior Concert Band and participate in band camp, trips and concerts.
Grade 11 Band
Music at the grade eleven level is strictly performance based. Students focus on further developing their instrumental skills. All grade 11 students are automatically members of the Senior Concert Band and participate in band camp, trips and concerts.
Grade 11 Guitar
In guitar class students are instructed based upon individual level of ability and experience. By the end of the course even the beginner guitarists learn how to strum basic chord progressions and learn rudimentary folk chords.
Senior Band Trip
The Senior Concert Band travels annually, performing at a variety of public venues, working with professional musicians and competing in music festivals. The band recently travelled to Boston to work with Harvard Band Director Mark Olsen, has performed throughout North America, in Italy, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic and Cuba.

Senior Concert Band
The Senior Concert Band bridges the gap between curricular and co-curricular. This award winning ensemble is comprised of music students from Grades 9 through 12 and performs both locally and internationally. Recent trips have included Italy, Cuba, Budapest, Vienna and the Czech Republic.
Jazz Bands
- Senior Jazz Band is offered to Senior School students who play an instrument. They learn a variety of music styles and perform in school concerts and LCC’s annual Café Cabaret.
- Jazz Combo is a small ensemble for Senior School students where the main focus is on developing improvisational skills. Students perform at assemblies, open houses and other special LCC events.
Small Ensembles
Small ensembles include jazz combo, flute ensemble, woodwind ensemble and brass ensemble. These groups play at special events at LCC and for local events.
Choir Program
The choir program is in its infancy and is designed for students in grades 9, 10 and 11. Regular weekly rehearsals are offered and the ensemble performs for special events, including Café Cabaret.
Café Cabaret
Café Cabaret is an annual event that showcases the many talents of individual students. In addition to musical performances, students also delve into visual arts, drama, dance and poetry for this occasion.
