It’s been a busy month in athletics! Here are some highlights:
The U13 Major Hockey team travelled to Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures for its first Défi of the season. In the round robin, the Lions faced difficult matchups against Collège Charles-Lemoyne, École Secondaire Cardinal-Roy, and Polyvalente Nicolas-Gatineau. However, they prevailed by winning each game 2-1, seeding them in a top bracket position for the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals they met Montreal neighbour Selwyn House School and lost 0-5. Despite the loss, Coach Murphy described this tournament as a potential turning point in the team’s season, and they’ll look to keep the momentum as they resume the regular season schedule.
The U15 Major Hockey team played two tournaments in two weeks: the LCC Invitational Tournament over the weekend of January 17, and the Loyola Ed Meagher Hockey Tournament the following weekend.
In round robin, the team beat Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf 3-1, followed by another 5-4 victory against Collège Bourget. Despite losing their third to Heritage High School 2-6, the two wins were enough to qualify for Saturday’s semifinals against Loyola. They defeated them 3-2 and advanced to the finals against Collège Notre-Dame. The Lions carried the momentum for the majority of the game, however, Notre-Dame came back and won the game 4-3 in overtime, solidifying the tournament title.
At Ed Meagher, the Lions won their first contest against John Rennie High School in overtime with a final score of 3-2. Game two was a heartbreaker, as Loyola took the rematch 4-3 in a shootout, placing the Lions in a consolation game against Regina Assumpta. Against the Panthères, they fell by a tight 0-1 margin.
The Varsity Hockey team hit the road to Buffalo, NY, for their second trip to the US in two weekends. The team played Nichols School in back-to-back exhibition games. In the first game, the Lions showed well, defeating Nichols 3-0. However, Nichols struck back the next day and beat the Lions 4-5.
The Bantam Basketball team competed in the Loyola Ed Meagher Bantam Basketball Tournament. In their first game, they lost to hosts Loyola High School 30-56, though redeemed themselves against École Jeanne-Mance by winning 46-28. Unable to qualify for the finals, the Lions finished strong in a consolation game against Collège Regina Assumpta, where they won 57-36.
The Bantam Girls Basketball team also competed in the Loyola Ed Meagher Tournament. They lost their first two games to Regina Assumpta 8-52, and to Loyola 14-35, but ended strong with a 35-24 victory against Jeanne-Mance.
The Cadet 1 Girls Basketball team flourished in their three games of the Loyola Ed Meagher Cadet Girls Basketball Tournament. In their first game, they beat Regina Assumpta 54-27, followed by a 46-29 win against Collège Sainte-Anne. The third matchup with Loyola decided the tournament winner. The Lions took command with an impressive 36-8 win, and achieved their second tournament win of the year.
The Cadet 9 Boys Basketball team struggled in the Cadet Boys Division of the Loyola Ed Meagher Basketball Tournament. They lost their three games, first to Sainte-Anne 52-53, followed by Jeanne Mance 24-83, and to Regina Assumpta 31-76 in their consolation game.
The Cadet 8 Boys Basketball team was featured in an exhibition game of the tournament against Loyola’s second team, which they won 35-22.
The Varsity Boys Basketball team had an impressive showing at the Loyola Ed Meagher Juvenile Boys Basketball Tournament. In their first game, they mounted a great comeback to beat Sainte-Anne 57-52. They then lost to a tough Jeanne Mance 38-70, disqualifying them from the finals, though would beat a very good Regina Assumpta team in their second meeting of the season 34-32.
