Remembrance Day at LCC

Today, LCC continued its long-standing tradition of honouring war veterans and recognizing those LCC alumni who perished in the wars. Between the two world wars and Korean conflict, LCC counts 76 fallen soldiers among its alumni, and there were countless more who bravely fought on Canada's behalf. 

LCC students, faculty, staff and guests gathered at Junior School, Middle School, Senior School & Pre-U assemblies to remember all who have served over the years and to reflect on their sacrifices. 

Fittingly, the assemblies took place in our Memorial Gym, an historic venue built in tribute to LCC alumni who lost their lives during the Great War. The Memorial Gym was designed and built by LCC alumni with donations from Old Boys, and was officially opened in February 1922 by Governor General Baron Byng of Vimy (commander of the Canadian Army during the Battle of Vimy Ridge). All LCC Remembrance Day services have taken place in the gym since inception.

The ceremonies included poignant readings of letters from Old Boys at the front, John McCrae's In Flanders Fields, and recitations of poems. Our concert band, along with a piper and bugler, performed meaningful musical tributes, followed by a moment of silence and the laying of a commemorative wreath by students. In the Senior School assembly, Operation Veteran founder, Paul Kavanagh '71 gave a heartfelt speech on the lasting impact of veterans. 

As time distances us from these events in history, it is a priority for LCC to preserve the memory of those who served our country.
